As everyone knows, Haiti has been devastated by an earthquake. Even as I type this, they are still feeling the aftershocks. The world has come together to aid the people of Haiti in many ways. However, everything starts with people. Even if you can only donate $5, please do so. It would help with the efforts to help. Watching the devastation that has occurred has broken my heart, as so many others. We were put on this world to help one another, so let’s start now.  Here are some information that I have compiled for everyone to donate, view videos, read news articles and tweets about Haiti.

How to Donate to Haiti

  • Doctors Without Borders – Has setup clinics to help Haiti. They are there trying to help and are asking for donations.
  • American Red CrossIf you go on their site, you can donate money, volunteer, or give blood. The Red Cross pledged an initial $1-million, and they are also giving people the option to send a $10 donation by texting ‘Haiti’ to 90999
  • UNICEF - Is providing humanitarian efforts, and also have a page for donations.
  • Yele Haiti Earthquake FundWyclef Jean has setup Yele to help with the earthquake efforts.  You can also donate $5 by texting 501501.  I think that it’s great that Jean is helping his Haitian people. There are so many times that celebrities forget their roots.  I’m glad that he hasn’t.

What to Call the 2000 – 2010 Decade?

11 December, 2009 | dcfemella | Comments

I just realized that the decade has almost ended and there is still not really a name for it. You have the 80s and the 90s. What in the world do you call the years between 2000 – 2010? 00s sounds silly. Or I guess you could also call it the “double-Os,” still ridiculous.

I read that some people are calling it “the aughts” or the “aughties.” Ummm…nice try, but that sounds worse than 00s. Your attempt to be cutesy with it is actually more of a failure than anything else.

Me? I usually call it the 2000s. Simple, truthful, and people can understand what I years I am referring to. However, when you get to the year 2011 and beyond, and you are calling 2000 – 2010 the 2000s, then what do you call the rest of the years?

It is a debate that is not going to alter anyone’s life, but it’s still an interesting one to think about. What do you think we should call this decade?

A Letter from a Texter Who’s Glad Virginia Passed the “No Texting While Driving” Law

Cell phones while driving, originally uploaded by paddyd85f.

I’m a huge texter.  Everyone knows that if you want to reach me, it’s better to send a text or an email.  If you call me, you will probably never hear from me. If you leave a voicemail, I only remember to check it twice a month.  A bad habit that has come out of this is texting while driving.  I know, I know….Shevonne, how can you do this?  It’s so dangerous?!  It’s something that I know is bad, but I still keep doing it.

I was surprised to hear at the comedy club last night that Virginia has passed a “No Texting While Driving” law.  At first, I thought it was a joke.  I whispered to the group I was with:

“Is he serious?  Did they pass that law?”

All of them shook their head up and down.

As someone who is always doing this, I am glad that they passed this law.  It will stop all the people, who have the same horrible habit as me, from texting while driving.

Dear Virginia,

Thank you for passing this law.  I know that I am the last person who should be happy about it, but I am because now there is a consequence for texting while driving.  Even though I knew the dangers of it, I still kept doing it because I am addicted to my phone.  Yes, I admit it.  I am addicted.

This will probably help me stop having to always be connected in every way.  Now I can go back to the days when I drove with only my music and mind to keep me company.  While you’re at it, consider banning people talking on the phone without a Bluetooth device.  It isn’t as dangerous as texting, because some of these people need to keep both hands on the wheel.

If anyone gives you crap about this law, send them to me.

Love,

Shevonne

P.S. Can you also a pass a law outlawing bad driving as well?

The Increase of Plane Crashes is Freaking Me Out!

16 February, 2009 | dcfemella | Comments

If you know me, you know that I am deathly afraid of planes.  Every time I am about to get on one, I have to calm myself down before I get in it.  One friend told me to use Xanax, and I am thinking that I might need it because my heart starts beating twice more than it should.    I feel like the guy in “The Twilight Zone” who was afraid of flying and encountered that monster.

The problem is that I love traveling.  In January, I went to LA.  In April, the family and I are headed to Panama.  I also plan on going to Italy this year.  I am excited but also deathly afraid.  Main reason is the increase of plane crashes going on.  It’s getting to be once a week, and I don’t understand why.

I know there are strict rules and regulations, but I can’t help wondering if they are using shoddy materials to decrease cost.  The planes that I ride on now are so flimsy and easily affected by turbulence than in the past.  I think that I might write a letter to my Congressman about this because I don’t think it’s just a coincendence.  There has to be a reason for this new phenomenon going on.  Maybe it’s just my phobia getting ahold of me, but I need someone to start investigating this before I get on the plane in April.

I know they say that it’s safer to travel on a plane than a car, but I am starting to doubt that now.

Here is the Twilight Zone episode, if you’ve never seen it:
