How Do You Quit Bad Habits?

They say it takes 21 days to stop a bad habit. I have the horrible habit of cracking my knuckles whenever I am nervous, thinking, or bored. It all started when I was around 12, and I haven’t been able to stop since. It even annoys me when I do it. Doesn’t matter. I’m still doing.
CRACK! CRACK!
I sometimes don’t even realize that I’m doing it until it’s too late. There are many times that I have made a decision to stop doing it, but then something happens that causes me stress, and I start cracking away.
How do you stop a bad habit? Anyone have any tips on how to not crack my knuckles?

I don't have any tips. I wish I did. My 13 year old started doing this a couple of years ago. I have no idea how to get him to break the habit.
I read an article where they say that cracking your knuckles isn't going to do anything bad to your hands, but I still hate how I HAVE to do it when I am stressed or I start obsessing about it.
the secret to unconscious actions is to consciously do them. after awhile, it will go away. so crack your knuckles consciously, maybe schedule it in – crack your knuckles every 15 minutes or every 30 minutes. tell us how it goes after 3 days of doing this.
I'm going to try that. I'll let you know if consciously cracking my knuckles stops me from doing it. Thanks!
