If You Were Given the Power to Kill, Would You Use it?

I just finished the Death Note anime finale and are now watching “Death Note: The Last Name.” For those who don’t know, it’s about a high school kid who finds a notebook.  Whenever he writes someone’s name in it, he/she dies.  He starts using the notebook to kill criminals and thinks himself as God.  It made me think.  If I found this notebook, would I use it?

At first, I would want to use the notebook to kill all the criminals who have hurt others in a horrible way, especially targeting children.  However, I would think of what this power would do to me.  It would change me into someone with a God complex because I would try and hurt anyone who would get in my way to stop me.  My quest for justice would turn me into a heinous serial killer who thinks that what I am doing is right.  My empathy would be driven away by my pride.

In the first opening for the anime, Light bites an apple.  It’s like the forbidden fruit that God forbade Adam and Eve to eat.  As we have heard, they did.  The notebook is like the forbidden fruit because no one should have that power to kill.  After they use the notebook, they would have knowledge that outcast them from heaven or hell.

Would I want to use the notebook? No.  Maybe I say this because I have seen the anime and the movies (or in the process of), so I know what could be the results of having such power.  I ask you.  Would you use the notebook?
