The Increase of Plane Crashes is Freaking Me Out!

If you know me, you know that I am deathly afraid of planes. Every time I am about to get on one, I have to calm myself down before I get in it. One friend told me to use Xanax, and I am thinking that I might need it because my heart starts beating twice more than it should. I feel like the guy in “The Twilight Zone” who was afraid of flying and encountered that monster.
The problem is that I love traveling. In January, I went to LA. In April, the family and I are headed to Panama. I also plan on going to Italy this year. I am excited but also deathly afraid. Main reason is the increase of plane crashes going on. It’s getting to be once a week, and I don’t understand why.
I know there are strict rules and regulations, but I can’t help wondering if they are using shoddy materials to decrease cost. The planes that I ride on now are so flimsy and easily affected by turbulence than in the past. I think that I might write a letter to my Congressman about this because I don’t think it’s just a coincendence. There has to be a reason for this new phenomenon going on. Maybe it’s just my phobia getting ahold of me, but I need someone to start investigating this before I get on the plane in April.
I know they say that it’s safer to travel on a plane than a car, but I am starting to doubt that now.
Here is the Twilight Zone episode, if you’ve never seen it:

I've also noticed the increase but I don't know if it is a increase in plane crashes or media coverage and sensationalism.
That might be one of the reasons, but just today another one crashed in Amsterdam. I am panic stricken for my trip in April.
There is definately an incerase of plane crashes! there was another one today!! this is soo weird!
Its something that I think needs to be investigated. Where did this
crash today take place?
This could be an astrological phenomenon. Planetary alignments can bring harmony or discord.
I was going to make the same comment…as we near 2012, this is more and more likely to happen, and will….among many other things.
Are you relating the increase of plane crashes to predictions made by
Nostradamus and the Incas (I think it was them) that the world is going to
end in 2012?
I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one seeing the increase in airplane crashes. There have been several just this week, and I saw another today… I don't have any theories, but I do find it quite alarming.
I just read that IATA sees $4.7 Billion airline industry loss,
http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/dj....
Makes you wonder if to make up for these losses, there are cuts being
performed in other places (e.g. maintenance)
I was just watching the news last night about the Philippine Air Force Plane and military air craft crashes, now you're freaking me out.
Sorry for freaking you out!
I also watched that in the news. We'll never really know and can't say what will happen.. If you really love to travel, just pray when you're inside the plane
That is a frightening thought.
planecrashinfo.com has a list of recent crashes. Also, bear in mind a lot of major airlines buy their fleet planes in one big contract. If the purchase took place long enough ago, (these planes can last upwards of 30 years) many planes would experience problems at the same time, accounting for the recent increase.
This planecrashinfo.com is dangerous for me cause it will really make me not want to get on a plane.
If that makes you not want to get on a plane, what would make you not want to get in a (far more dangerous) car?
Airplane crashes could quadruple this year over last and it would STILL be much safer to be in an airplane than in a car.

I have the same problem, and I also Love to Travel. I wish there was a solution for us that would WORK! Benzodiazapems do help. I'm also studying Buddhism, because I notice it says in there that the source of fear is our Ego, and if you can dissolve that, but HOW do you do it? Well I'll study further. Why can't we have a Star Trek thingy where we beam ourselves! hehehehehehehe. I wonder what percentage of people suffer this. I hear about it a lot. Maybe we can find a solution together! Best wishes! Stephen.
I'm all for a Star Trek transporter. We should get together and create it!
=D

@ thechannelc What a load of shit, if you're going to try and think of a reason as to why plane crashes are becoming more common at least base it logic and reality, astrology certainly isn't the reason why plane crashes are increasing (astrology may be good for a laugh but it certainly doesn't explain anything).
Do you actually have figures on the increase of plane crashes? If you look say 60 years ago the actual number of plane crashes would have been a lot lower (because less people used aeroplanes to travel) but the percentage of those planes that crashed would have been higher because they would have been a lot less safe to travel on, the machinery would be less reliable etc.
Although plane crashes might seem to be becoming more common it could just be because of the increase of total air travel, statistical you're less likely to be in a plane crash than a car crash but that's because you don't take a plane to work or to the shops or other everyday travel. As air travel becomes cheaper and more people use planes to travel obviously crashes will go up although the probability of you being in a plane crash would be the same.
That theory that lake minbc posted about a lot of planes currently reaching an age at which they'll start breaking down sounds interesting although I wouldn't have thought it would be too much of a factor seeing as they get safety checks regularly (I would hope) and I'd have thought important parts would get replaced regularly as well.
I thought these links might interest you:

http://www.ntsb.gov/aviation/Table2.htm
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/planecrash/risk-02... (bar chart)
If you look at the chart and don't count 2001 (obviously an event like that doesn't happen very often) then it looks like plane crashes have actually gone down slightly over the last few decades.
I think it is the media increasing the amount of coverage of plane crashes
Hi…interesting blog entry. May be quite irrational, but I too have begun to feel that airline as a mode of transport has become much less reliable for safety. I travel by air, thinking it's a gambling!
I agree that the felt air turbulence has increased: it could be due to the design of the aircraft or due to an increase in the air turbulence itself.
Believe me. I know it's irrational, but I can't help having this fear. I wonder if it is the design of the plane that has made them so flimsy.
Lol, interesting argument. to tell you the truth, i know jack about astrology but keep that between us.
The Nostradamus and Incas (I think) say the world is going to end on 2012. I really don't think plane crashes are linked to that prophecy though.
No I wasn't but I've read that Nostradamus mentioned there would be an increase in the frequency of disasters as we near 2012. I've also heard the HAARP has something to do with plane crashes. Another conspiracy theory. Very X-File-ish. And I've heard someone else observed that they often happen in 3s. Is that a sign? For all we know, it could be any number of reasons.

It seems like everything always happens in three (pregnancies, deaths, weddings). I wonder why that is.

oops. correcting my reply. see below.

Read “Atlas Shrugged”.
I added it to my Goodreads
